8TH Annual X RING CUSTOM Coyote Competition
Friday & Saturday January 18-19, 2019
X RING CUSTOM held their 8th Annual Coyote Competition on Friday, January 18, 2019 and Saturday, January 19, 2019. At signup, each team received bite sticks, door prize tickets, and a competitor drawing ticket for the X RING CUSTOM $200.00 Gift Card. Then on Friday, at 5:00 pm, a total of 41 teams from throughout Illinois (grand total of 82 hunters) started their hunting adventure. Teams called in downed coyotes throughout the two-day hunt and ended with a Saturday 5:00pm coyote check-in.
Even with trying weather conditions, a cold and rainy Friday night and blizzard like conditions on Saturday afternoon, an impressive total of 54 coyotes were called in by the competitors. There were 44 coyotes checked in, weighed, and counted on Saturday. The check-in crew carefully inspected each coyote to ensure it was a fresh kill. Food, awards, and drawings took place at the Toledo American Legion starting at 5:00pm. Many hunters received various door prizes consisting of a hunting bags, cups, lights, coyote urine, tools, broadheads, coyote drags, and other hunting gear from area and corporate sponsors including: Hornady, Zander’s Sporting Goods, Hall’s Fur and Game Farm, and X RING CUSTOM.
Winning the drawing for the Savage Axis 243 with a Bushnel scope, from X RING CUSTOM, was Robert Utter of Toledo, IL. The winner of the competitor drawing for the X RING CUSTOM $200.00 was Ron Carlen of Greenup, IL.
Cash prizes were given to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, Biggest, and Smallest coyote winning teams. Custom designed coyote skull mount trophies, made by Colin Cole of Toledo, were given to the 1st place team.
Winning 1st place with 8 coyotes, weighing 266.75 lbs, was Nathan Standerfer of Tower Hill and Nathan Cushman of Mode. Daniel Webseter of Kinmundy and Jon Schoonover of Carterville downed 8 coyotes weighing 266.70 lbs which earned them the 2nd place prize. Coming in 3rd place was Lance Dasenbrock of Effingham and Dillon Hardiek of Teutopolis with 8 coyotes weighing 258.15 lbs (which was a 3-way tie with 8 coyotes, so the largest combined weight was the determining factor and only a shy .05 lbs separated 1st and 2nd place). Kyle Steele of Greenup and Zach Bolin of Dieterich snagged 7 coyotes weighing 226.45 lbs earning them 4th place. 5th place went to Riley Walk of Neoga and Collin Jansen of Effingham for grabbing 3 coyotes weighing 115 lbs.
Riley Walk of Neoga and Collin Jansen of Effingham snatched the biggest coyote which weighed a whopping 47.4 lbs. The smallest coyote, 24.4 lbs was brought in by Matt Jackson of Toledo and Gabe Shafer of Greenup.
After the hunt, many cold, red-eyed hunters enjoyed some hot chili, peanut butter sandwiches, and cookies while telling their interesting hunting stories and made some cherished hunting memories from the competition. X RING CUSTOM is looking forward to the 9th Annual Coyote Competition in 2020!
